Dieter Roth

Balle Balle Knalle

Although he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Dieter Roth has always thought of himself mainly as a writer, viewing his artistic work as a way to earn money for writing. The use of language accordingly forms a leitmotif throughout his oeuvre.

Based on significant works from various phases of his career, this catalogue shows how text and image are intimately connected for Roth and how his literary and artistic endeavors cross-fertilize each other in an endless cycle.
